Raised by his Mother and Grandfather during the Great Depression (1929) in Evanston, Illinois, Michael was taught the value of sales early in his life. Like most families there was not much spending money for young people, so his grandfather often gave him a large sample box of various socks in different colors and sizes which he would then sell for one to three cents per pair by knocking on doors throughout his neighborhood’s apartment buildings.
Since his beginning in sales - and for the more than 75 years afterward - selling has been a part of his being. Items Michael has sold include eggs, pots and pans, heating systems, aircraft, yachts, art, and real estate. He's also run a thriving consulting business.
He was drafted into the military after college in 1951. During this service time he attended Officer Candidate School, earned an officer’s commission and then attended flight training. He has ratings in fixed wing, helicopters, jets and rotorcraft. Following his honorary discharge, he went into the aircraft sales industry.
While with Aircraft Radio Corporation in New Jersey he attained the position of General Sales Manager and was responsible for acquiring record setting government contracts for aircraft communication and navigation equipment.
He was then a VP and General Manager of a Cessna Aircraft Distributor/Dealer that sold a record 365 Cessna Airplanes in one year.
In 1974 Michael Smith experienced a life changing event.by attending the est Training. At the time he was already the owner of successful sales organizations in real estate, yacht and aircraft sales, and an art galley.
Michael started by assisting with the organization as a Seminar Leader Instructor and Training Supervisor Instructor. In 1976, as an assistant, he started the est Training in Miami. After assisting in various categories from 1974 to 1983, he was invited to work on staff as a National Sales Manager for the Forum Satellite Events, National Training Supervisor Manager, and then Center Manager in New Orleans, Miami, Tampa and Sarasota. He also was an early founder/owner of Consulting Technologies Inc, an affiliation of Consulting companies dedicated to Organizational Transformation.
He also has coached many sales organizations in developing programs that show sales associates how to get in a unprecedented "performance zone" and how to maintain that level of production on a continuing basis.
